The beautiful statue of Mary portrayed as the Addolorata “Lady of Sorrows” made its first entrance into our parish on March 16, 1941. The statue was commissioned, purchased, and shipped from Sicily in 1939 using funds collected from the Sicilian community in San Diego. The society was originally established by the immigrants of S’Elia, Sicily as they longed to continue their traditions. Additionally, immigrants from Aspra, Sicily have contributed a great deal of leadership and devotion to the success of the society.

Since that time, the statue has been the inspiration of great devotion and faith. The Maria SS Addolorata Society represents over half a century of devotion, community involvement, and memories for its past and present members, their families, and the Italian/Sicilian community in San Diego. The Lady of Sorrows has been an essential part in the success of Our Lady of the Rosary.

Our Lady of Sorrows is the patron saint of Slovakia; the Congregation of Holy Cross; the village of Mola di Bari and the Molise region of Italy, Brooklyn, NY; the state of Mississippi; and in the Philippines, the cities of Dolores, Quezon; San Andres, Catanduanes; City of San Fernando, Pampanga, and so many other cities throughout the world.
